Story - A Mid-Century Modern Oasis Overlooks the Pacific in Old Del Mar

Curation by Jeff Walker

Built in 1953 as the James & Lydia Phillips residence, the owners and their architect partnered with Union Steel Company to create a Mid-Century Modern oasis overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Located in the heart of Old Del Mar on a coveted private and secluded cul-de-sac location, this modern gem provides the best in coastal living.

The homes framing uses steel construction, one of four prototype residences created by Union Steel.

Taking full advantage of the materials, the design provides incredible natural light and open spaces.

The home caught the eye of renowned landscape architect Emmett Temple, who previously owned and landscaped the generous yard space, offering a wide variety of unique plants and greenery.

Architecture critics have characterized Wemple’s “lively” work – including the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, the Nixon Presidential Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo — as “conceived with attention to cultural values and a sensitivity to the nature of the places in which the projects occur.” (Source: Zsa Zsa Gershick at USC News)

Incredible views from the front yard look down to the sands of Torrey Pines Beach, the city lights of La Jolla and beyond, while the backyard deck and primary bedroom look straight on to the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Channel Islands, with pine trees as a backdrop over the hills of Old Del Mar.

Currently available as an off-market opportunity.
