The Winfield & Ella Sellers Residence by William S. Hebbard - Point Loma

The Winfield & Ella Sellers Residence, a Mission Revival with Prairie overtones design is a classic example of early modern architecture. Extremely rare clay tile wraps the exterior of this Historically Designated with Mills Act home. Completed in 1915, the residence remained under Sellers family ownership until it was conveyed to the Zoological Society of San Diego, Inc. in June 1970.

The interior is full of vintage charm with original birchwood flooring, wood window frames, trim and built-ins.

The builder of the house, John A. Chisholm, was an established building contractor, while Robert A. Jackson was an acknowledged carpenter. At this time Hebbard was already a popular and widely-regarded architect.

Prior owners completed a Modern-style, freestanding second story addition to the north side of the home, which added a two car garage, primary suite and rooftop deck offering incredible panoramic views of Downtown San Diego and the harbor. Specifically designed to be consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings, the addition is sympathetic and complimentary to the original design and construction of the residence.

In 1896, Hebbard formed a partnership with Irving John Gill, which lasted until 1907, when he once again practiced by himself. Long been recognized as a master architect, 15 of Hebbard’s buildings have been designated by the San Diego Historical Resources Board. Of these 15, 12 were attributed to the Hebbard & Gill partnership, which spanned the years 1896-1907.

At the national level, three buildings have been designated by the State Office of Historic Preservation and the National Park Service as representations of Hebbard's work as a master architect. Two of these, the George Marston House (1904), and the Burnham-Marston House (1906), also designated by the San Diego Historical Resources Board, were attributed to the Hebbard & Gill partnership and were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and 1986 respectively.

The Seller’s Residence is located in Point Loma’s Roseville-Fleetridge neighborhood and is walking distance to the bay, San Diego Yacht Club & all of the neighborhood's shops & restaurants.

The Seller’s Residence is listed for sale by Jeff Walker at Agents of Architecture, Inc.
