FROM THE FOUNDER, JEFF WALKER

When people think of San Diego, some of the first thoughts that come to mind are tacos, beaches, playing golf, and sunny days. These are all accurate and amazing features of this incredible city.

But one thing people don’t traditionally think of in relation to San Diego is... it’s architecture.

Unless you live in one of our historic neighborhoods or you purchased a home you knew had architectural significance, you might not know that architects like Cliff May (the ‘creator’ of the California Ranch home) and John Lloyd Wright (son of world-renowned Frank Lloyd Wright) designed their first homes in San Diego, with a majority of them still standing today.

Areas such as Mission Hills, Kensington, and La Jolla were home to other architects such as Lloyd Ruocco, Carleton Winslow, Richard Requa, and Lilian Rice. Individuals who would go on to have remarkable careers and create buildings now considered works of art, embedded in the fabric of their communities.

Mid-century modern is a term usually associated with “Palm Springs” or “West Hollywood”.

However, chances are that when someone pictures the classic Mid-Century Modern home, it is the design of William Krisel, whom also began his rise to fame in San Diego. Neighborhoods such as Pacifica, the Point Loma Estates, and La Jolla Shores Heights are blessed with numerous streets full of his modern roof line designs.

As our city evolves, so does its architectural offerings. Today’s local architects such as Jonathan Segal, Soheil Nakhshab and Wallace Cunningham push the boundaries on how we live in and design a space. From LEED certified buildings to incorporating new materials for building on previously unusable space, these artists continue to provide San Diego with an ever-changing design portfolio.
